Walking backwards to a jump-off point.

TYPICAL DECEPTION SCENARIOS

The following scenarios illustrate a few common attempts to shake off pursuers. Efficient trackers must be aware of the different ways a quarry will try to escape contact.

Change of Direction at a Big Tree. When moving from a thickly vegetated area to a more open area, the quarry walks past a big tree toward a semi-open area for up to ten paces before attepting to walk backwards to the forward side of the tree. He then makes a 90-degree change in direction, passing the tree on the forward side. He then may change direction again 50 to 100 meters farther. The goal is to draw the tracker away from the tree and down the wrong path.

Cut-the-Corner Deception. The quarry uses this technique when approaching a known road or trail intersection. About 100 meters from the road, he changes direction 45 degrees to the left or right. When he reaches the road, he purposely leaves obvious sign down the road in the direction of the deception and then attempts to walk backwards along the track line to the point where he entered the road. He then moves in the opposite direction of the false trail, attempting to leave as little sign as possible. Once the quarry has moved the desired distance and located a suitable jump-off point, he changes direction and continues forward.
